Pazar te Mbare!

Today is New Year's Eve, and as this holiday was one of the only legal holidays to celebrate during the many years of communism, it still remains the biggest and favorite day of the year to the Albanians. To share some of the Albanian New Year's cheer, I thought I could take you through the pazar to do a little NewYear's shopping!!

Happy New Year to you too! Would have been better if we'd all been in a villa in Greece eating gyros! Love the pics!

Hi Krystal and Steve!! THanks for these. I feel like Krystal was touring me though the market. Wow, what a different experience than going to Cub Foods here in MN. : ) Can I ask a super ignorant question? So, they were not allowed to celebrate holidays under communism? I feel super ignorant right now, but really, I was surprised when I read that. In my spare time I am trying to learn more about this stuff--beliefs, political ideals, and how it all impacts the masses. Thanks for anything you can share from what you have learned/seen/experienced there! Blessings this new year to you both.

When you said our pazar was better than yours I had to come back for another look. And the verdict is NO WAY! Yours has way more than ours... bunnies, chickens, turkeys, and sheep?! Ours just has some fish. Ours only smells funny right after the once a year sacrifice. . . they do it in the pazar area.

The third picture of the beautiful angora rabbit is kind of heartbreaking when I think about someone eating him/her.
